The state of the knitting box

WIPs

Pictured here are my current WIPs, lounging around on the sofa. From left to right:

  • Backyard Leaves scarf — Not much progress here since last time. It’s classified under need-lots-of-attention knitting.
  • Midwest Moonlight scarf — The light blue one at the front (the actual colour is more blue than shown here). This scarf is progressing along quite nicely, I only have half a ball more to go. I love this scarf! Love the pattern, love the yarn.. so soft! This is my not-much-attention-needed-but-not-while-toddler-is-around knitting.
  • Sesame cardigan in Jo Sharp Silkroad Aran Tweed — The green one at the back, plus also shown there are the dark green and cream balls that I used for the fair-isle part. I’m up to the first sleeve now, on the sleeve cap shaping. This is my mindless-knitting-even-when-toddler-is-around knitting.
  • Lovely Lace socks from IK Spring ’06 — This is the chocolate brown one on the dpns, down on the right. I just started this a couple of days ago on a bout of Startitis, so it doesn’t look much at the moment.

Looking at this picture, it struck me how my colours taste has changed. A couple of years ago, if you look in my wardrobe, all you’d see were navy blues, greys and blacks. Green was my least favourite colour back then. Now I’m so much more drawn towards earthy natural tones like these colours — the greens, creams, brown and sky blues. Hmm I wonder why.

Beaded Cardigan Without Beads

In other news, (gee I must be on a roll! three posts in a day!), I have started a new project. It’s the Beaded Cardigan from Debbie Bliss Special Knits, using the Filatura Di Crosa Zara merino in light purple that I bought last month.

Except that I’m not going to add the beads, since it’s intended for a toddler who loves to poke around things and pull things apart (not to mention putting things in her mouth occasionally), I think beads won’t be a good idea. That, plus the fact that beading looks like a helluva hard work!!

This has been a very quick knit, so quick that I’ve finished the back and both left and right fronts before I get a chance to take photos and write a post about it!

That picture at the top is the right front, just before the neck shaping. I’ve finished that piece since then, I just haven’t taken another picture of it.

I really really really love knitting this. I love the seed stitch edgings, I love the purly bumps texture, I love the yarn, and I love how quick this is knitting up. Going to start the sleeves now!

On my needles

I was going to start this knit blog by cataloging the items that I have knitted in the past. But then there would be a lot of them, and many are probably not that interesting anymore now. So I thought I’d better just post pictures of the items on my Flickr account instead, and I’d just write about what’s on my needles now. That would be more exciting! So here goes…

First, we have the Kiri shawl. I’ve seen various Kiris on the knit blogs around, and I just love the way it looks. I started this a few weeks ago, although I’ve only managed to work on it here and there. I’m knitting this with Jo Sharp Classic DK in Lilac, which I got through eBay. Here’s what it looks like after about 4-5 repeats:

I’m using my 60cm 5mm circs, and it is now clear that I will need longer needles. Hmm.. 150cm long maybe?

And here’s a close up of the lace. I love the way the fern leaf pattern looks!

I’m not quite sure about the colour… it’s kind of halfway between purple-pink and brown. I was hoping it would be more like purple/pink, since that’s what I thought lilac is. Some days it looks like purple, some days it looks just like brown. Sigh. But it’s growing on me.

The other thing that I’m working on now is a poncho for Annette. This poncho is inspired by the Children’s Poncho from Knitting Pure and Simple, except that I’m working out the pattern myself, and I’m adding a fair isle hearts pattern around the bottom edge, which is taken from the Cheesylove pattern from Knitty. I like to mix and match! 🙂

Here’s what it looks like at the moment. I’m just halfway through the fair isle.

I’m also hoping to add a hood to this poncho, but I haven’t quite worked out the pattern yet. Hope it’ll work out.
