Bendigo Woollen Mills shadecard

Loving… the new Bendigo Woollen Mills shade card that I received just recently. In particular, their new yarn, Luxury. I haven’t been a big fan of Bendigo’s wool yarns (I do love their cotton yarn — more on that next post), but this one feels very soft! And the colours are gorgeous. I’ve been walking around carrying the shade card in my hand, for the past week or so, just brushing my fingers across the sample yarns and dreaming of what to make with them. I’ve placed an order and now just have to wait!

Stash fabrics

Playing… with fabrics again, first time in a long while. These are just fabrics from stash, most of them from Spotlight. Going to be a bookshelf curtain for Annette’s room.

New coat

Planning… a new knitting project, a coat for me, with some Cascade 220.

Doodling

Doodling… making a pattern for a top for Annette. If it works out I might share the pattern here 🙂

While I was away

Sorry for the sudden silence again, folks. I had been on an overseas trip! But unfortunately it wasn’t quite a holiday… My dear old dad in Indonesia has been having a lot of health problems in the past couple of years (including a surgery earlier this year), but for many reasons I haven’t been able to go there to visit him. When we heard from my mum that my dad was ill again, hubby and I decided that I should go this time. So I went, leaving hubby and Annette behind in Sydney. It was only for a week, but I’m glad I got to see my mum and dad again. Thankfully dad’s condition improved while I was there, he was back at home and not in hospital, so we did get to enjoy spending time together. My mum and dad took me around the city, like they always do whenever I go there to visit. It has been a long time — almost 8 years — since the last time I visited Jakarta, and a lot had happened in that time. I had gotten married, gained Australian citizenship, and had a kid. My parents had retired from their jobs, moved to a new house, new neighbourhood. So it felt a bit like seeing things from a stranger’s eyes, among the familiar sights.

My parents are now living in a smaller city an hour west of Jakarta, but lots of their activities are still in Jakarta. So there were lots of traveling in the car while I was there. Along the way I took opportunity to snap some pictures. I’m not very good with words, maybe that’s why I like capturing things in pictures instead. So if you’re interested, feel free to take a look at this photo set, a little peek at Jakarta. Most of the photos were taken from a moving car, so pardon the blur!

I haven’t done much crafting, so nothing to show I’m afraid. It might still be a bit quiet here for the next couple of weeks, as I seem to have misplaced my motivation to knit or sew, opting to curl up with a book instead. But I do hope to be back again soon. Bye for now, and take care!

Hello again!

I hope everyone had a lovely Christmas and new year! Our family had a quiet one this time. We’ve had a Christmas get-together with my parents the week before Christmas, just before they left, with hubby’s parents, and some family friends as well. We spent Christmas day by ourselves, and even on new year’s eve we didn’t feel like venturing out to join the crowds. It was good just to relax at home. I got this pile of books to entertain me.

New books

Thank you so much for your kind comments on my last post. They mean a lot to me. Don’t worry, I’m okay, and I’m ready to look forward to what this new year will bring. Here are just some things that I’d like to do this year.

— Knit more. Last year was rather slow, knitting-wise, for me. The only things I made for myself were socks. Not that there’s anything wrong with knitting socks (I’m totally an addict now)! I just didn’t have time for anything bigger. But several talented knitters with their fabulous sweaters are enticing me to knit jumpers or cardigans for myself, so I want to make time to knit at least one or two this year.

— Having said that, I will still sew. Last year I got a chance to develop my sewing skills, and I want to keep going. I’ve been wanting to make a quilt for Annette, and after forever admiring other crafters’ gorgeous quilts, I think it’s about time I jump in and do it.

— Yarn diet. Yep. I had never imposed a yarn diet on myself before, mainly because I thought my stash was not that big. Oh, pardon me, the noise you just heard was the sound of my husband roaring with laughter. Hello! Time to face reality! I kept putting this off, saying to myself, after this purchase I’ll go on a yarn diet. But now it’s for real. I won’t be buying any more new yarn until I’ve made a reasonable dent in my stash.

— And finally, I’d like to have more hours in a day so I can do all the above. Heh! But wait. Annette is starting preschool two days a week this year, so more time for me me me! Yay!! Excellent.

Where did time go?

Time seems to keep slipping away from me. Days have gone past and I haven’t done anything productive. I haven’t touched my sewing machine for ages, even though my head is buzzing with ideas for things that I want to make. And not much knitting either. Hmm, not very inspiring, is it. But I did get to finish something! Little Majolica, remember her? I’ve finally finished the knitting and the seaming up, and now she’s blocking. Just in time for the Australian summer! Sigh. Such is the fate of my knits. Just you watch out for the summer clothes that I’m planning to make for Annette, they’ll be ready around winter I suppose! 🙂 Anyway, Little Majolica photos later!

This lovely yarn arrived here last week, from Katie of Live 2 Knit.

Live 2 Knit yarn

Back in September I won the Southern Summer of Socks KAL’s banner/button contest, and Katie generously offered two skeins of her sock yarns in the colourway of my choice as the prize. I picked the Elizabeth 100% merino sock yarn in ‘First light’. And last week they arrived. Thank you Katie!! I love them!

I’m thinking of making the Firestarter socks from Yarnissima out of these. I have heard that this sock pattern can be a little challenging, but I do love how it’s predominantly plain stockinette (great for showing off the variegated colours) and yet with interesting cables and gusset construction. I love a good challenge, lets just hope it doesn’t backfire on me 🙂

Oh, and I have a new toy!

Ball winder

No more winding yarn by hand for me… Got this via eBay, but still brand new! Love, love the efficiency of it. I’ve used it already to wind the Live 2 Knit yarn, so I’m ready to go. This ball winder is a (very early) Christmas present from my brother in law (the one I made this scarf for). Thanks R!

More good mail

This time, thanks to Good Yarn Karma!

Good Yarn Karma loot

A while back, Jessica posted the Interweave Knits mag (Fall 2005) to give away on Good Yarn Karma. I put my hand up for it as I like the jumper that’s on the cover, and I didn’t have this issue yet (I’m a bit late to the party with the IK mags). And now it’s mine! Thanks, Jessica!

The yarn is from Happy Spider. I put up some yarn to give away on Good Yarn Karma as well, which was snapped up by Happy Spider. But that’s not it, she also offered to send me one of the gorgeous sock yarn that she hand dyed herself, in return. Thanks, Happy Spider, I love it!
